I don't know how many of you follow my blog of the rebuilding of a Spencer 42, hull 17.  She's been out of the water for a very long time and I'm doing a complete rebuild.  Since I got her a year or so ago I've contemplated whether or not to change out the original motor mounts, which were glassed in wood.  About  month ago I decided to change them out with solid fiberglass.  One deciding factor was the story that was posted about the Spencer 35 whos engine came loose and thrashed around inside the boat in heavy seas.  I don't know if the mounts came loose from the hull or the bolts broke; the article doesn't say.

I'm currently reading Hal Roth's first book about when he bought Whisper, a Spencer 35, and sailed it around the Pacific Rim.  What an adventure, also, like "After 50,000 Miles, a great sailing textbook.  He's just left Guam and headed for Japan.   .... quoting from page 182 .... " I started the engine to charge the batteries.  The little Diesel was running nicely when suddenly there was a horrendous bang, followed by a crash, and then silence.  I opened the engine-room  compartment and was surprised to find the engine gone.  The flimsy, built-in wooden mounts had fallen to pieces and the unsupported engine had dropped into the bilge.  Once again we were a true sailing ship."

I think I did the right thing changing them out while the boat is out of the water ... high and dry ... before I install my rebuilt Perkins 4-107.  Nine layers of  mat and roving.

FG box channels?

From the photos you posted, it looks like you replaced the wood rails with box shaped fiberglass rails. Am I interpreting that correctly? I am curious how it is working out. I am considering repositioning the mounts in my Spencer 35 "Carena" in an attempt to lower the engine (and cover hatch) about 2 inches. The raised hatch is kind of a trip hazard. I will have to pull out the old wood rails and lower them, and perhaps replacing them as you have might be wise. Do you have any further specs on your design? I see you used 9 layers. What kind of resin? How did your mounts attach? Thru-bolts with fender washers?

engine mounts

I have not yet re-installed my engine. I used general purpose laminating resin. Where I get my supplies says that GP is much stronger than was being made 30 some years ago. No need to go for the 404 resins. You can't see from my pictures but I extended the glass above and below the mounts 8 inches. That's a lot of surface area holding each pad in place. I also put a couple layers inside back about 6 inches. That's all the farther I could reach to smooth it out. I plan on using plates on the bottom side of the mounts.
I f this doesn't answer all your questions feel free to email me. I can take close up pictures if you like.

New engine beds

For what it's worth, I replaced the engine mounts in Matelot when I repowered her in 2008.
