BATTERIES

WIRING YOUR BATTERIES FOR SERIES OR PARALLEL

How to Increase System Power

Two or more batteries can be easily connected to boost your system voltage and/or capacity.
There are three methods to obtain additional voltage, and/or capacity, as shown below.

In the top left diagram, Voltage doubles but Amperage remains the same.
In the top Right diagram, Voltage remains the same but Amperage doubles.
In the lower diagram, both Voltage and Amperage Double.

Of the three systems shown above, the top, right diagram was used on Vida de Oro with great success.  In my case, I used two 12 Volt Batteries, each with 125 amps.  The end result was a 12 Volt combination with 250 amps of power.  I did this on House Bank 1 and also a second set for House Bank 2.  This gave be a 12 Volt System with 250 Amp Hours on each side.  Should I have needed both House Systems to be wired together, I used two battery switches to connect the two systems in Parallel that gave a 12 Volt total system with a total of 500 Amp capacity.
The Start Battery is not a Deep Cycle, but rather a good 12 Volt Starting Battery that was separate from the system, or could be used in conjunction with both House Battery Systems.  Future plans are to wire the four house batteries (bank 1 and bank 2) together.  This will give an end result as one house bank and one start bank.  This will eliminate one battery switch and a lot of extra heavy wire in the circuit.  Remember, on the best wire your true loss will be about 10% over a long run of.
Be sure your Alternator can produce the energy required in a reasonable time of engine running.  You can do the calculation by Math to determine what you need.  A good tech. can calculate this for you.

V = I x R   or  Volts =  Current x Resistance

To Find Voltage

_V_
R

Voltage is measured in volts
Voltage is an electric potential difference between two points on a conducting wire.

Current is measured in amps.
Current is charged particles which flow from the voltage source through conductive material to a ground

Resistance is measured in ohms.
Examples of items with resistance are light bulbs, hair dryers, toasters.

Always check with an expert before working with your batteries.
Great damage can be done if you make an error as well as personal injury to yourself.
