A little history on Benora III
Benora III was built for Harry Herlihy of Vancouver. He had been a sailor for many years out of Royal Vancouver Yacht Club when he decided he wanted a Spencer 1330. At the time we were starting the tooling for the 1330. Due to technological changed in the interim years, it was decided that the plug for the 1330 could and should be built of fiberglass construction rather than the traditional method of building a wooden plug from which to take the mold. Harry agreed to be the buyer of the first 1330 which had the custom hull, molded fiberglass deck, and custom lead keel. Basically there is no difference in appearance but the lead is slightly heavier since the keel was cast in a sand mold prior to constructing a steel mold for pouring the lead. Reg Banfield, also a member of Royal Vancouver, purchased the boat after Harry died.

Widmann of Hawaii
Living aboard in Port Sidney Marina in Sidney, BC., I get to see a lot of boats coming and going. On one occasion, while on my way to work, I spotted a Spencer 1330 on E dock. Her name was Bering Sea. I did not get a chance to meet the people as they had departed before I returned home. However, a friend of mine dropped by and told them about our website and our group. I sent an email and their reply was short (as they are on the move) but it was very informative. It seems that the designation Hull #2 should actually be Hull #1 as Benora III is actually the "Plug" but for some reason, they gave the "Plug" the #1 designation. This is odd as I noticed in preparing the Roster Page that the "Plugs" are detailed separately. They must have needed every hull into production at that time. So it seems, Bering Sea will carry the #2 Hull Number. Also of note - It seems that Bering Sea was launched the same day as President Nixon resigned from Office. On hand at the ceremonies was none other then Pat Brandlmayr. She came to see that the new 1330 sat in the water on par with the water line. It did, and the launching was a success. Our designer, John Brandlmayr, passed away just between the designing and the building of Bering Sea. Such a loss.
To explain the reason the change in Plug / Hull designation, see the comments above Seaway Hull 1 (Benora III)
